However, is climbing Kilimanjaro during the rainy season truly as unfavorable as it seems?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Kilimanjaro experiences two distinct rainy seasons. The first, known as the Long Rains, falls during April and May, presenting the lengthiest and wettest period of precipitation. Conversely, the Short Rains occur from November to mid-December, marking the mountain’s second rainy season.<\/p>\n At Kilimanjaro Experts, we typically advise against climbing during these rainy seasons, and for good reason. During my recent expedition on the mountain, incessant rainfall persisted for the initial three days, resulting in a damp and unpleasant trekking experience. Such conditions can significantly dampen morale, making the journey arduous for all involved.<\/p>\n It’s worth noting that this particular trek occurred in January, a month typically associated with drier conditions. If the rainfall was challenging during a supposed ‘dry-season’ month, one can only imagine the difficulties encountered during the monsoon months.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n For those compelled to trek during the rainy season, there’s no need to despair. In fact, several readers have shared positive recommendations for the experience.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n During the rainy season, the Marangu Route emerges as the optimal choice for climbers. It stands out as the sole route on the mountain offering overnight stays in huts rather than tents, ensuring a dry haven amidst the wet conditions.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n So, there you have it. While I still recommend opting for a dry-season climb if possible, considering that ascending Kili may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, it’s worth making it as perfect as possible.<\/p>\n However, if climbing during the rainy season is your only option, don’t lose hope. With an adventurous spirit, it can still be a rewarding experience. The sparse crowds on the mountain during this time can outweigh the occasional downpour. To mitigate the weather’s impact, you might consider tackling the Marangu Route and perhaps bringing crampons and\/or ice axes (consult with your agency for advice on this). If you’re willing to embrace the challenge of potentially extreme conditions and hazardous terrain, a low-season climb could turn out to be a truly memorable adventure!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
