The Best Time to Climb Mt Kilimanjaro

The best time to climb Mt Kilimanjaro is during the dry months from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. These periods offer the most favorable weather conditions with clear skies, stunning vistas, minimal rainfall, and abundant sunshine.

Nevertheless, it’s essential to remember that weather can be unpredictable, regardless of the season. While Mount Kilimanjaro is climbable throughout the year, some months are more advantageous. We strongly recommend ascending this iconic peak during the driest months, and it’s advisable to avoid April and November, as these are the primary rainy seasons, making the trails more hazardous.

A month-by-month overview, of the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Unlike the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro remains accessible year-round, but proper preparation is key. We generally do not schedule climbs during April/May and November.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in January and February to early March

During this period, you’ll enjoy optimal trekking conditions characterized by predominantly dry and clear days with excellent visibility. Occasional showers and a chance of snow above 14,000 feet provide fantastic photo opportunities.

Considered the “high season,” it’s often less crowded than the main climbing season from June to September, making it a balanced choice for those seeking a less crowded yet weather-friendly experience.

Best for: Hikers who prefer to avoid crowds while benefiting from dry conditions. The possibility of snow on the summit is a bonus.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in March, April, and May

best time to climb mt kilimanjaroEarly March can be pleasant, but as the month progresses, rain can become more frequent, resulting in muddy trails, overcast skies, and reduced visibility. Late March and May may offer some dry weather, but it’s somewhat hit or miss.

April through early May marks the long rains and is not conducive to climbing. If your schedule demands a shoulder-season trek in late March or May, be prepared for wet weather and potentially limited visibility. Prior trekking experience is advisable to handle the more challenging trail conditions.

Best for: Experienced trekkers who don’t mind unpredictable weather and seek to avoid crowds. We recommend routes on the north side of the mountain.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in June, July, August, and September

This period, characterized by the best weather conditions, coincides with summer vacations in the US and Europe, making it the peak climbing season with the highest number of climbers. July and August are particularly popular months. If you wish to avoid crowds, consider June or September, or even October, which may entail some rain.

While occasional showers are possible, especially in the forest, it’s predominantly a dry season. Routes tend to be busier during this time, especially around the full moon.

Best for: Climbers seeking the best weather conditions for their journey, and who aren’t discouraged by crowds, which are most common on the Marangu and Machame routes.

Climbing Kilimanjaro in October and November

The short rains typically arrive in November and last for 3-4 weeks. This period generally sees less persistent rain than the long rains in April and May, with most showers occurring in the late afternoon. The mountain is relatively quiet during this time.

To avoid crowds and be well-prepared for wet weather, we recommend the Rongai route or the Northern Circuit route, as the northern side of the mountain experiences lower overall rainfall.

Best for: Those looking to escape the crowds and experienced trekkers unphased by wet weather.

When can you climb Kilimanjaro?

Important Considerations

Weather Conditions

Kilimanjaro’s proximity to the equator means it experiences rainy and dry seasons, rather than the typical four-season pattern. The prime time for climbing Kilimanjaro falls in January through early March and June through October, offering clear skies, excellent views, and comfortable hiking conditions.

These months also tend to be drier and busier.

Temperature

Temperature on the mountain varies with the seasons and altitude. The summit zone is considered “Arctic,” with sub-freezing temperatures throughout the year. December to March and June, just after the rains, are typically the coldest, and you may encounter snow on the summit. This is the period with fewer visitors compared to the busier months of July through August.

Rain Seasons

Kilimanjaro experiences two distinct rainy seasons: the long rains from the end of March through May and the short rains in November. April and November generally see the highest rainfall, although this can vary. The rainy season starts around mid-March and often continues into May. During this time, conditions can be wet, stormy, and muddy, particularly on the southern face of Kilimanjaro.

Even during the dry season, it’s still possible to encounter some rain. Thus, it’s advisable to carry reliable wet-weather gear in your daypack.

Visibility: Clouds, Mist, and Fog

Trekking through cloudy skies and fog is not the ideal experience. Late March to the end of May and all of November often feature poor visibility due to cloud cover, limiting panoramic vistas and photo opportunities.

Crowds: Number of climbers on Kilimanjaro

As Kilimanjaro’s popularity continues to grow, the favorable weather in January through early March and June through October attracts more climbers. The Marangu and Machame routes tend to become crowded. Opting for less crowded routes like the Northern Circuits, Rongai, or Lemosho can provide a more serene trekking experience. Additionally, private toilet tents are provided for our climbers to mitigate the overcrowding of shared facilities.

For those who value camaraderie and friendships forged with fellow climbers, the slightly busy periods are a trade-off worth considering. Many climbers have formed lasting friendships with people they’ve met on the mountain.

What’s the best time to climb Kilimanjaro without the crowds?

If you’re willing to tolerate the possibility of rain and are adequately prepared, the shoulder seasons just before and after the rains offer the quietest time of the year. Opting for solitude may outweigh the risk of encountering wet weather and potentially having the mountain to yourself.

We generally avoid climbing during the peak rainy seasons (April/May and November). Alternatively, selecting routes with lower foot traffic, particularly those on the northern side of the mountain, is a wise choice during wetter months, as these routes tend to experience less rainfall and offer more shelter.
